1, Chapter III). As will be described in Chapter XX, vibratory communication plays an especially important role in reproductive isolation of the species. Nevertheless, it is likely that differences in the daily activity patterns also contribute by isolating the species temporally from one another, producing a partial "time sharing". Cupiennius coccineus in particular (males and females) has a relative activity minimum at the time when activity of Cupiennius getazi (males and females) is maximal.

Among the vast majority of spiders harmless to humans is Cupiennius. Some information is available about its poison, but before summarizing this I should like to introduce briefly the most important and best known of the truly dangerous spiders. There are about 30 species of these. Only two are likely to be encountered at our northern latitudes: the water spider (Argyroneta aquatica, Agelenidae) and Chiracanthium punctorium (Clubionidae, called in German Dornfingerspinne or "thorn-finger" spider).

It spends the light, daytime hours in its natural or fabricated hiding place on the plant. Apart from the mechanical protection and concealment from predators that this behavior provides, it is clearly advantageous in shielding the spider from the sun and preventing heat desiccation. Figure 6 shows microclimatic details of two typical retreats of Cupiennius salei, one on a banana plant and the other on a bromeliad. During the day the average rate of water evaporation inside the retreat is considerably lower than just outside.
