In 1595 Francis Langley opened a new open-air theatre on the Bankside (the Swan) and in 1597 established a new company there (the Earl of Pembroke’s Men), poaching a number of Lord Admiral’s Men in the process; and in 1599 the Earl of Derby’s players began playing at the newly improved playhouse at the Boar’s Head, with the Earl of Worcester’s players later taking their place at that playhouse (1601). The proliferation of playhouses and playing companies in the capital probably explains why on 19 July 1598 the Privy Council felt obliged to restate that only the Lord Admiral’s and the Lord Chamberlain’s players were authorized to perform in London and why on 22 June 1600 they issued an order licensing only the Lord Admiral’s at their new playhouse, the Fortune, and the Lord Chamberlain’s at the Globe.

106 For Beeston to oust Prince Charles’s players in favour of a company of largely unknown players would seem surprising and it may be that at least some of the actors were Beeston protégés, had performed with other London companies (perhaps as hired men), and/or that they were brought in to London by Moore, having cut their teeth as actors with one of the travelling branches of Lady Elizabeth’s Men. Either way, with a guaranteed playing space and the backing of an entrepreneur with a stock of plays and playing gear, the newly constituted Lady Elizabeth’s Men was well placed to succeed in London and seems to have thrived.

In fact, those plays that survive may all post-date the company’s amalgamation with the Children of the Revels: Middleton’s A Chaste Maid in Cheapside, Field and Fletcher and Massinger’s Honest Man’s Fortune and Jonson’s Bartholomew Fair. At this point (1613–14), it would seem that Lady Elizabeth’s Men were following in the footsteps of the boy companies and specializing in London-centred city comedy and tragicomedy. indd 45 24/01/2014 15:16 46 ACTING COMPANIES AND THEIR PL AYS or tragicomedies.
