Most of the special capabilities were successfully demonstrated, although many were never taken to full development. There were hundreds of small deficiencies to be resolved, as there are with many new weapon systems, and these would make the aircraft a handful for a few years until resolved. The prototype C-5 runs engines at Edwards AFB, generating a cloud of black exhaust behind. This prompted a brief fleet grounding. Cracks appeared in the wing root skin during the static testing of the wing on 13 July 1969 at about 124 percent of maximum load. The problem was attributed to a design error and a modification quickly designed. This was introduced to aircraft already flying at the earliest opportunity, but by this time, aircraft 40 was well along in assembly and the wing box for the 60th aircraft was being built.
