Extraordinarily difficult. Since the collection as we have it is the result of so many modifications, we are better off speaking about authors rather than a single author, and dates instead of a single date. Simply put, the collection of myths we possess under the name Fabulae is likely so far removed from the author’s original that, we suspect, he would have scarcely recognized it as his own. That is, after all, the name given in the sole ancient reference to the work, and probably also in the now lost single manuscript that survived into the modern era.

As for the specific sources of the Fabulae, it is not possible to determine what Greek work or works Hyginus turned to, not only because Hyginus is extremely reticent about his sources, but also because so many Greek mythographic works have perished. It was once fashionable to think that Hyginus simply translated a single Greek handbook of mythology into Latin, but it is now generally recognized that Hyginus himself may have used multiple sources and that the work has gone through many different phases of reworking during which other sources were tapped as well.
