Sloan and Luks influenced Reginald Marsh (1898–1954), who stressed the unsavory and congested aspects of urban life: the public beach, subway, and burlesque halls, especially New York’s popular Gaiety Burlesque. Once a story illustrator, he used the narrative mode in his paintings. In Marsh’s 1930–1933 “(Gaiety) Burlesque (Also Known as Irving Place Burlesque)” he focuses on the sordid spectacle of women undressing for an all male audience; one grinning character, recalling some of Runyon’s mischievous narrators, looks back at us to draw us into the world we are observing.

Thus we can say that the penny newspapers were the parents of the modern American tabloid. In 1919, Joseph Patterson launched the tabloid the Illustrated Daily News, soon known as the Daily News, and Hearst followed in 1924 with the Daily Mirror, which announced it was 90 percent entertainment and 10 percent news and baldly copied the Daily News. A few months prior to the introduction of the Daily Mirror, Bernard Macfadden began another tabloid, The New York Evening Graphic, and recruited Walter Winchell to his staff as a gossip writer—a position which is that of the ultimate voyeur and spectator—focusing on illicit romances, births, and other social and political tidbits.

Runyon’s New York is part of our cultural memory. Because of the reach of his writing, he created America’s image of New York and especially Broadway, even more than Al Hirschfeld or the New Yorker or even the New York Times, which was not at the time a national newspaper. Of course there is the actual city and the one he constructed in his columns and fiction—and in the films he wrote and produced—but it is that fictional city most Americans came to know in the era before jet planes and inexpensive air travel.
