How have donor attitudes changed? Private donors in general are no longer as willing or able to fund an unlimited and often redundant array of nonprofit services. Nor does government have sufficient funds to meet all of the needs of the community at the scale to which those needs have grown and at the level of quality that is now expected. Private foundations in general have temporarily lost a portion of their corpus funding and, despite the creation of a few mega foundations, do not have sufficient funds to fill the gap created by the cutbacks in government spending and individual giving, nor is there the desire or intent to do so.

An analytic assessment, formal or informal, can give you insights into their age, gender, ethnicity, geographic location, relationship to your organization, and so forth. Are your donors alumni, or members, or ticket buyers, or are they wholly distinct from your beneficiaries (as for a food bank or homeless shelter, for example)? Do most donors give year after year? Look at your major donors, asking many of the same questions. Do their gifts recur from year to year? Do they increase? Are the major donors engaged in other roles, as board members or volunteers?
