5 11 Comparison of MANET and WSN A wireless sensor network is similar to a mobile ad hoc NETwork or MANET. Here also no pre-deployed infrastructure is required. The nodes are organized in the form of flexible mesh architectures which can dynamically adapt to support introduction of new nodes or expand to cover a larger geographic region. As long as there is sufficient density, a single network of nodes can grow to cover an unlimited area. Unlike cell phone systems that deny services when there are many phones active in a small area, the interconnection of a wireless sensor network only grows stronger when nodes are added.

As the brain processes all data sensed by human organs, a huge volume of data collected by the WSNs will be processed on large computing servers (probably in a cloud computing environment) connected to the Internet and will be used for analysis and reasoning over the Internet and possibly for remote actions. A number of projects have been started for real-life applications of WSNs and IoT. A number of architectural, protocol and other issues require further research. Handling a large volume of data is another issue which is being considered by the “big data” researchers.
